Flannan Isles Lighthouse Disappearance

When the relief vessel Hesperus finally reached Eilean Mòr on 26 December 1900, after days of bad weather, the Flannan Isles light was empty: principal keeper James Ducat, second assistant Thomas Marshall and occasional keeper Donald McArthur were gone, the flag was not flying, the lamps had been cleaned and refilled, the beds were unmade, and one set of oilskins remained inside. At the west landing, investigators found storm damage at startling heights, with railings bent, a supply box smashed roughly 33 metres above the sea and turf torn near the cliff edge, suggesting the men may have been caught by a huge wave while securing equipment. Yet the island gave up no bodies, no distress signal and no final witness, leaving only a working lighthouse and the question of why all three men stepped into the weather together.

Wanda Beach Murders

Frederick Valentich Disappearance

Bass Strait, Victoria, Australia·1978·Unresolved

Twenty-year-old Melbourne pilot Frederick Valentich lifted off from Moorabbin Airport on 21 October 1978 in a rented Cessna 182L, registration VH-DSJ, bound for King Island across Bass Strait, then radioed Melbourne Flight Service to ask whether any traffic was known below 5,000 feet. Over the next minutes he described a large object with bright lights, a metallic surface, a green glow, and movements unlike an aircraft, while his engine began running roughly; his last reported words were that the object was hovering and was “not an aircraft,” followed by a burst of unexplained metallic noise on the radio. Search aircraft and vessels found neither Valentich nor the Cessna, leaving investigators with theories of spatial disorientation, a night crash, misidentified lights, or deliberate disappearance, but one stubborn question remains on the tape: what was above him when he vanished over the water?

Peter Falconio Disappearance

Barrow Creek, Northern Territory, Australia·2001·Unresolved

On 14 July 2001, British backpackers Peter Falconio and Joanne Lees were driving their orange Kombi van along the Stuart Highway near Barrow Creek when a ute driver signalled them to pull over, claimed there were sparks from the engine, and moments later Lees heard a gunshot before she was bound, forced toward the vehicle, and escaped into the dark scrub; Bradley John Murdoch was convicted in 2005 of murdering Falconio and attempting to kidnap Lees, but Falconio’s body has never been found, and Murdoch died in 2025 without revealing where, somewhere in the vast country between Alice Springs and Broome, he left the only physical answer his victim’s family still seeks.
