
Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370
Just after 1:19 a.m. on 8 March 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 signed off over the South China Sea with 239 people aboard, then its transponder went dark, the Boeing 777 turned back across Malaysia, and satellite handshakes traced it for hours toward a lonely arc of the southern Indian Ocean; debris later found on Réunion, Mozambique, Tanzania, and other shores proved the aircraft came down, but even after renewed Ocean Infinity seabed searches in 2025 and 2026, the main wreckage, cockpit recorders, and the reason for the final turn remain missing.
Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 began as a scheduled overnight international passenger service from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Beijing Capital International Airport. The aircraft was a Boeing 777-200ER, registration 9M-MRO, operated by Malaysia Airlines. On board were twelve crew members and 227 passengers. The early portion of the flight appeared routine. After the aircraft passed the waypoint IGARI, during the handover from Malaysian air traffic control to Vietnamese air traffic control, normal communication ended. The transponder signal disappeared, routine radio contact ceased, and the aircraft did not establish the expected next contact with Ho Chi Minh air traffic control.
What made the disappearance unlike a conventional crash was the evidence that MH370 did not simply vanish at the point where civilian radar contact was lost. Malaysian military radar data later indicated that an aircraft assessed to be MH370 turned back across the Malay Peninsula, passed near Penang, and continued northwest over the Strait of Malacca before leaving primary radar coverage. Satellite communication metadata then showed that the aircraft remained airborne for several more hours. The pattern of satellite logons and handshakes with the Inmarsat network produced arcs of possible positions, with the final relevant arc placing the end of the flight in the remote southern Indian Ocean, west of Australia.
The official Malaysian Safety Investigation Report did not identify a single confirmed cause. It stated that the aircraft diverted from its filed route, that the transponder ceased operation for reasons that could not be determined, and that the loss of communications was more consistent with systems being manually turned off or interrupted by power disruption than with an ordinary recorded malfunction. The report also found no evidence in available records that the pilots or cabin crew had recent personal difficulties, unusual financial stress, or obvious behavioral changes. The aircraft was considered airworthy, and investigators found no maintenance record that explained the disappearance. Without the main wreckage, flight data recorder, cockpit voice recorder, or confirmed impact site, the investigation could not determine the real cause.
The search became one of the largest and most technically complex in aviation history. Australia coordinated the southern Indian Ocean search after analysis indicated that the aircraft had travelled south. Surface searches found no wreckage at sea, and underwater surveys mapped vast areas of previously poorly charted seabed. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau led a search of more than 120,000 square kilometres of high-priority seafloor before the tripartite search by Malaysia, Australia, and China was suspended on 2017-01-17. A private search by Ocean Infinity in 2018 also failed to locate the aircraft. Later Malaysian agreements with Ocean Infinity revived the possibility of renewed seabed search, and a 2025-2026 search phase surveyed thousands more square kilometres without confirming aircraft wreckage by the official 2026 family update.
Although the main wreckage has not been found, the case is not without physical evidence. A flaperon discovered on La Réunion in 2015 was confirmed as belonging to MH370's aircraft, and other debris items recovered along western Indian Ocean shores have been confirmed or assessed as highly likely to have come from the same aircraft. These finds support the southern Indian Ocean end-of-flight reconstruction, but they do not reveal why the aircraft diverted, who or what controlled it after the loss of communications, or the exact location of the wreckage.
MH370 now occupies two layers of history. The first is a documented aviation disaster, investigated under international civil aviation rules, grounded in radar data, satellite metadata, debris analysis, drift modelling, and seafloor search. The second is a modern mystery shaped by grief, incomplete official answers, delayed information, competing expert reconstructions, and a vast online ecosystem of speculation. Claims involving hijacking, deliberate pilot action, hypoxia, electrical failure, cargo fire, military cover-up, interception, or paranormal disappearance remain theories unless supported by evidence. The official position remains unresolved: the aircraft almost certainly ended in the southern Indian Ocean, but the final cause and final resting place remain unknown.
