
Mistpouffers
Along foggy coasts and lakes from Belgium to the Ganges delta, Seneca Lake, and the Carolina shore, people have reported sudden cannon-like booms that shake windows without a visible storm, explosion, or earthquake; nineteenth-century observers called them mistpouffers or Barisal guns, while modern seismologists point to shallow earthquakes, distant thunder carried by unusual air layers, gas venting, waves, meteors, and naval activity as possible causes. The mystery is not that every boom is unexplained, but that the same sound keeps appearing in different places under different names, leaving witnesses to ask what fired a cannon from an empty sky.
Mistpouffers are not a single incident so much as a recurring acoustic mystery. The word is usually rendered from Belgian or Dutch usage as a kind of fog belch or fog gun, and it has become a convenient umbrella term for sudden, cannon-like booms heard near coasts, deltas, lakes, and other broad water landscapes. In different regions, the same family of reports has carried different names: the Barisal Guns in the Ganges and Brahmaputra delta, the Seneca Guns or Lake Guns near Seneca Lake in New York, brontidi in Italy, sea shooting or lake shooting in German-speaking areas, and uminari in Japan.
The reports have a shared emotional shape. Witnesses describe a deep report like artillery, a low concussion rolling over water, or a distant explosion without smoke, lightning, visible impact, or an obvious human source. Some are heard once, others in repeated salvos. Some are accompanied by window rattling or light shaking, while others are only heard as a remote thud on clear days. The setting is often important: flat deltas, estuaries, lakes, sea cliffs, and coastal plains can make sound travel in misleading ways, especially when temperature inversions, winds, fog, or layered air bend distant acoustic energy toward listeners.
The historical record is strongest for a few named traditions. In Bengal, nineteenth-century observers discussed the Barisal Guns in the Proceedings of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, with correspondents debating whether the sounds came from the sea, the earth, distant artillery, waves, or some unknown natural force. In 1895 and 1896, Nature carried letters connecting Barisal reports with the European Mistpouffers and other similar sounds. Around Seneca Lake, local lake-boom traditions were already prominent enough to enter literature through James Fenimore Cooper's story The Lake Gun, and modern sources continue to describe reports of cannon-like noises called Seneca Guns or Seneca Drums.
The scientific problem is that the same kind of human report can be produced by many different causes. The U.S. Geological Survey notes that many booms are human-made, including explosions, heavy vehicles, construction, quarrying, aircraft, and sonic booms. Natural causes are also plausible. Small shallow earthquakes can produce audible booms even when little shaking is felt. Meteors and bolides can generate shock waves and infrasound. Thunder, surf, storm waves, volcanic or mud-volcano gas venting, methane ebullition from sediments, rock bursts, avalanches, and booming sands have all been suggested for different cases. Atmospheric ducting can make a source sound as if it comes from an impossible direction or from no source at all.
For that reason, Mistpouffers remain unresolved only in a collective sense. Some individual booms have probably been solved, and others can be narrowed to a likely category. A 1979 Science article by Thomas Gold and Steven Soter argued that many brontides are associated with seismic activity and that shallow ground-to-air transmission can explain some explosive natural sounds. Seismologist David P. Hill later reviewed the subject and emphasized a plural explanation: there is no need to imagine a single universal mechanism when different geology, weather, water bodies, and human activities can produce similar reports.
Modern instrumentation has improved the search. Seismographs, infrasound networks, weather radar, satellite fireball detection, hydroacoustic surveys, and social media time reports can now separate many events that nineteenth-century observers could only debate by ear. Yet the older mystery has not vanished. The reports remain scattered, local, and often fleeting. By the time investigators check seismic logs, weather records, aircraft tracks, fireball reports, shipping activity, and military notices, the sound itself is gone. What remains is a pattern: the world occasionally speaks in booms, and the listener is left to decide whether the voice came from sky, sea, earth, machine, or memory.
